- This document describes the institutional level elements of data for the Plant Collections project.
There will typically be one Botanic Garden record for each garden participating in the project. However, the intent is to provide institutional level information that may be useful for a number of purposes besides identifying the owner of plant collection records. As such, a general recommendation would be to provide one record for each significantly different location that a particular garden exists- for example, a single institution may have two gardens with noticeably different environments (perhaps opposite sides of a town in mountainous terrain). The institutional level data will be held in Google Base (GBase). This is a global, persistent database that is replicated and provides the additional bonus of being automatically indexed for searches by Google. Each entry in GBase is provided with a persistent globally unique identifier, records may be public or private, editable by authorized accounts only, and may be deleted at any time if desired. Basic statistics about the number of times a record is "clicked" is recorded.
